Unforgettable moments
The MTV awards came in 1984 to honor the best music videos and, since it appeared, it has been filled with iconic and controversial moments. Popverso has listed some of them:
In the very first edition, Madonna made history when she presented “Like a Virgin” dressed as a bride. The performance was controversial at the time because, according to conservatives, the singer made an apology for premarital sex.
Then we jump to 2003 and Madonna makes history at the VMAs again, again with “Like a Virgin”, only this time alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Speaking of Britney Spears, she owns one of the most iconic performances at the awards show. In 2001, the pop princess sang and danced “I’m Slave 4U” with a snake around its neck.
Another kiss that was talked about at the VMAs was that of Michael Jackson and his wife at the time, Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ daughter. The repercussion was great at the time, especially as many said that their marriage was a facade.

Beyoncé has a list of memorable moments at the Video Music Awards. Like the medleys of the albums “Beyoncé” and “Lemonade”, but not forgetting the 2011 edition when the singer announced that she was pregnant with Blue Ivy.
Lady Gaga is another one who has several memorable moments at the MTV awards. But how to forget the year she went in a meat dress?
One of Rihanna’s last performances as a singer was in the 2016 edition. The singer was honored with the “Michael Jackson Vanguard Award” for her career and performed four times in the same night to showcase her greatest hits.
The VMAs also have several beefs in their history and one of the most emblematic is from the 2009 edition, when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech.
She had taken the award for “Best Female Video” for “We Belong With Me” and beat out artists like Katy Perry, Pink, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. Kanye then took the stage, took the mic out of her hand and said, “I’ll let you finish, I’m happy for you, but Beyoncé made one of the best videos ever.”
Taylor didn’t react, didn’t finish his speech and went backstage. Later that night, Beyoncé, who had won Video of the Year, invited Taylor to return to the stage and finish her speech.
