Knife attack leaves two dead in Germany; suspect is arrested

A 28-year-old man from Afghanistan was arrested after a knife attack in a park in the city of Aschaffenburg, Germany, this Wednesday (22). Two people were killed, including a child, according to police.

The suspect was detained at the scene, in Schoental Park, an English-style garden in the Bavarian city.

A 41-year-old German man and a 2-year-old boy of Moroccan descent were the victims, according to police in a publication on X.

A two-year-old Syrian girl was injured in the incident, said Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.

Three other people were also injured, including a 61-year-old man, a child and a teacher, Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach said.

Police said there were no signs of other suspects and no danger to the public.

The suspect, who had a history of violent behavior, was undergoing psychiatric treatment. He had his asylum case closed and said he would leave Germany voluntarily in December, but he did not leave and remained in treatment, Herrmann said.

The stabbings add to a series of violent attacks in Germany that have raised security concerns ahead of parliamentary elections on February 23.

A Saudi doctor was arrested after a hit-and-run attack at a Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg, also in Germany, on December 20, in which six people were killed and around 200 were injured.
