Know it before, comes the festival that promotes sex education in schools

Italy, bringing up the rear in regards to correct sex education in schoolsbut also in the family. To give “the alarm” was Mario Puiattipresident AIED (Italian Association of Demographic Education)at the last national conference held in Rome at the International Women’s House last November: «Italy is one of the very few nations in Europe, together with Cyprus, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Lithuania, lacking curricular programs on the merits».

A fact confirmed by National Fertility Studypresented by Ministry of Health (2019) on the current situation: today 8 out of 10 students (middle, high school and university) look for sexual and reproductive information on the Internet, while only 1 in 4 he asks in the family. Of these, most (94%) believes that it should be the school that must guarantee information on sexuality and reproduction.

Bridging this educational gapbut also create a greater awareness on the subject of sexual and emotional health, within the broader spectrum of individual well-being: this is the goal of know first, the first and only festival in Italy on sexual-affection, which will be held from 17 to 19 February in Rome at Largo Venue, organized by Flavia Restivo, Isabella Borrelli and Andrea GiorginiWith the’Selene APS Association and funded by Lazio regionin media partnership with School.net.

Three days dedicated to one vision of sexuality positive and multidimensional, which includes fundamental psychological, relational, cultural and social aspects of the human experience. For that, I am many guests, called to discuss the most diverse aspects of the broad sphere of sexuality. Among these, the psychologist, teacher and TV face Fabrizio Quattrini; the director of the School of Gender Economics at the Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome Azzurra Rinaldi; the journalist and writer Julia Blasi; the narrator Marina Pierribut also social characters such as Leonardo Bocci.

Sex education as law in school

The fact that in Italy affective and sexual education has not yet entered the curricular programs by right is a factor that prevents the development of defenses against gender hate in the new and old generations.

The lack of sentimental and sexual education in schools, in fact, makes it absolutely necessary to reflect deeply on subjects concerning the physical and psychological well-being of the person and on crucial issues such as gender discrimination, feminicide and the lack of respect for civil rights.

The goal of Know it first

The organizers of Know it first Flavia Restivo, Isabella Borrelli and Andrea Giorgini in this regard have launched a online petition at Change.org for the introduction of sexual and emotional education in schools, which he collected within a few weeks more than 35 thousand signatures.

The concrete proposal? The introduction of a mandatory training in high school of the city of Rome and the Lazio Region (to begin with), establishing a Day dedicated to sexual-affective education and the establishment of one online space permanent edited by psychologists, educators, sexologists and other experts in the field that is accessible to students, families and teachers from any device. For the primary schoolshowever, the petition provides only education to affectivity and consentto help the little ones in the development of emotions and respect.

«School remains the most practical means for reach a large number of young people from different backgrounds in a replicable and sustainable way – declare the organizers -. Currently, sex education or sexual-affective education is present in some Italian institutes in a discretionary and self-managed form, but it is essential instead that it is provided for by law, so that it is a non-exclusive tool of information, prevention and self-determination: as soon as it is regulated, it will be accessible in every public institution, in the same way and with the same program. Believing in the progress of the country, we bring this proposal to the attention of the entire population”.
