Brazil faces an upward trend in cases of dengue and chikungunya, according to the Ministry of Health.
In the first three months of this year alone, dengue diagnoses rose 53% compared to the same period in 2022 – in the case of chikungunya, the climb was almost 100%.
In an interview with CNN Radio infectologist Kleber Luz stated that the variation over the years is normal, but that it brings a bad perspective, since the diseases cause deaths.
“An educational action is needed for the population, to prevent the emergence of mosquito breeding sites aedes aegyptiin any place that accumulates water, such as tires, vases and flower containers, for example.”
The infectologist also highlighted the differences in symptoms between the infections caused by the mosquito.
“Chikungunya brings fever and involvement of the joints, which become swollen and with intense, disabling pain,” he said.
Dengue also brings fever, but “the pain is in the muscle, without swelling, and with the so-called ‘bone-breaking fever.’
“Severe cases of dengue can cause a drop in blood pressure, which progress to death,” he added.
Kleber Luz also recalled that the zika virus, also transmitted by the Aedes, is currently “dormant”, but that, as symptoms, it brings little fever, but many spots on the body accompanied by itching.
