On Thursday (8) Cardinal Roberto Prevost was elected as the new pontiff of the Catholic Church, choosing the name Leo XIV for his papacy.
By assuming the position of leader of the Catholic Church, Leo XIV receives religious responsibilities, but also from the Vatican as a country.
Like other heads of state, the pontiff has current spending.
Many faithful, over the years, sent questions to the Catholic Church wanting to know details about the “payroll” of the predecessor of Leo, Pope Francis, who died in April.
To the surprise of many, the answer was fun and unexpected.
In the documentary “Amen: Asking the Pope”, 2023, Francis revealed that, contrary to popular belief, he does not receive any salary.
“When I need money to buy shoes or something, I ask. I don’t have a salary, but I don’t worry about it, because I know I’ll be fed for free,” he joked at the time.
Despite holding a prestigious position and performing a function of enormous responsibility in the Catholic Church, the Popes does not receive a regular remuneration.
This practice goes back to the tradition that the pontiff himself follows, of simplicity and humility, associated with the vows of poverty made when he entered the company of Jesus.
The reality, as a Vatican spokesman explained, is that The Pope has never received a fixed salary something that was publicly clarified after speculation in 2001 on an alleged payment to Pope John Paul II.
Although it does not have a salary, the pontiffs have their personal needs, such as housing and food, fully funded by the Vatican.
Leo XIV will also manage a charity -oriented fund, which uses to support causes and needy people around the world.
An example of this was the donation of half a million dollars to the bottom Peter’s Pence, which helps thousands of people in Mexico, made by its predecessor.
This action, as well as not receiving a salary, reflects the idea that a Pope’s mission is not guided by financial interests, but by generosity and the principles of service and humility, echoing the life of Jesus, which also received no financial compensation for his actions.
