Kosovar Prime Minister: ‘We believe that the EU is our destiny’

“Kosovo demonstrates that with democratic reforms you can do better with development,” Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti said at the Economist conference.

“Thanks to democratic reforms we can expand our economy and fairly redistribute the wealth we generate. We moved up seventeen places on the Transparency International corruption index and fifteen places on press freedom. So democracy and economy go hand in hand ” said Mr. Kurti and added:

“We believe that the EU is our destiny. We will apply for full membership in the EU this year and for the Council of Europe, because our citizens will be able to access the European Court of Justice.”

Mr. Kurti described the invasion of Ukraine as “Russian fascism”, while he criticized the non-implementation of western sanctions against Russia by the Serbian government and, at another point in his statement, he added: “We cannot be between the fire and the fireman. That is to be cynical. There is no room for neutrality. Hope, passion must overcome cynicism.”

Mr. Kurti placed his hope in the “leadership example” of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and emphasized that the presence of Joe Biden in the White House creates a favorable moment for the European perspective of the region and added:

“The solution for the Western Balkans is the EU. We will ensure that no authoritarian leader prevails. The EU must grow organically, we must highlight European values, advancing democratic reforms and achieving political stability.”
