Kostas Skrekas meeting with the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, met today, Friday July 8, in Alexandroupoli with the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, Parviz Shahbazov. The General Secretary of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, Alexandra Sdoukou, also participated in the meeting.

The focus of the meeting was the international energy crisis and the closer cooperation of the two countries in the field of natural gas. As Mr. Skrekas mentioned: “the two countries cooperate closely in the energy sector and Greece uses the TAP pipeline, covering 20% ​​of the country’s needs, with gas from Azerbaijan”.

In particular, the Minister of Environment and Energy highlighted the importance of the Southern Natural Gas Corridor for Europe’s energy security and the diversification of energy supply sources and routes, through the Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), the Interactive Natural Gas Pipeline (TAP ) and the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCPX).

Mr. Skrekas made a special reference to the completion of the works for the construction of the IGB pipeline and emphasized that it is an infrastructure of strategic importance that contributes to the independence from Russian fuel imports.

He also presented the integrated strategy of the Greek Government to ensure the adequacy of natural gas supply. “Greece” pointed out, “contributes in this direction with the start of the construction of the new Floating Storage and Gasification Station in Alexandroupoli, while in the coming years another floating storage and gasification station will be added in Alexandroupolis, one in Corinth and another in the area of Kavala”.

Finally, the two Ministers agreed that they support the actions for the use of renewable gases, such as biomethane and green hydrogen, in the existing natural gas transmission systems and the creation of new specialized infrastructures for this purpose.
