The Kremlin said today that it blamed Ukraine for “freezing” peace talks between the two countries, saying it was unclear what Kyiv wanted.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov told a news conference: “The Ukrainian leadership is constantly making contradictory statements. This does not allow us to fully understand what the Ukrainian side wants.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier that he had repeatedly tried to arrange a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war but that Russia did not yet seem ready for serious peace talks.
“There are things to talk about with the Russian leader. I’m not telling you that για (for me) our people are looking forward to talking to him, but we have to face the realities of what we are living through,” Zelenski told an Indonesian think tank.
“What we want from this meeting… We want our lives back… We want to take back the life of a sovereign country within its own territory,” he said.
The last known peace talks took place on March 29. The contacts continued at a distance for a while but both sides say they have now stopped.
