Kremlin blames Kyiv for bombing Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

The Kremlin today blamed Kiev forces for the bombing of Ukraine and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and warned of “catastrophic consequences” for Europe.

The bombing of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant “by the Ukrainian armed forces” is “potentially extremely dangerous” and “could have devastating consequences for a wide area, including European territory,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

In addition, the Kremlin announced that Western countries with influence in Ukraine should pressure Kyiv to stop bombing the Zaporizhia nuclear plant.

In a teleconference with reporters, Peskov said: “We expect the countries that have absolute influence over the Ukrainian leadership to use it in order to rule out the continuation of the bombing.”

In fact, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that yesterday Ukraine bombed the factory, destroying high voltage cables and forcing the facilities to reduce their production.

Kyiv, for its part, denies targeting the plant and accuses the Russian military of hitting the power station’s facilities.

The Ukrainian nuclear power company Energoatom announced yesterday, Sunday, that a worker was injured when the plant was shelled by Russian forces on Saturday afternoon.

Reuters was unable to cross-reference the information with an independent source.

In recent days, Moscow and Kyiv have accused each other of shelling areas near the nuclear plant, which is in territory controlled by Russian forces.

The head of Ukraine’s state-run nuclear power company called today for the plant to be turned into a demilitarized zone under the control of international peacekeepers.
