The Kremlin condemned on Monday (4) the comments by the leader of the ruling party in Polandwho said that Warsaw would be open to having US nuclear weapons on its soil and would receive a 50% increase in the number of US troops in Europe.
Speaking to reporters on a conference call, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such a move would only lead to “an increase in tensions”.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who leads the Law and Justice (PiS) party, said over the weekend that Poland would be open to having nuclear weapons stationed on its territory – but that this was not being considered at the moment. The politician demands a stronger position of the country against Russia.
“Poland would be pleased if the Americans increased their presence in Europe from the current 100,000 troops to 150,000 in the future due to Russia’s increasing aggressiveness,” Jaroslaw Kaczynski told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
Before the Russian invasion, there were about 80,000 US troops in Europe.
