Kremlin: Gazprom is supplying Europe with as much gas as it can

Russia’s Gazprom is supplying Europe with as much gas as possible, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters today, adding that technical issues with pipeline equipment due to sanctions are preventing Gazprom from exporting more.

Russia delivered less gas to Europe today in a further escalation of an energy standoff between Moscow and the European Union that will make it harder, and more expensive, to fill the Union’s tanks ahead of winter.

The drop in deliveries, which Gazprom reported earlier this week, means the capacity of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline — the main distribution route for Russian gas to Europe — has dropped to a fifth of its capacity, as Russia said that another gas turbine needs repair.

“Gazprom provides [αέριο] as much as is necessary and possible. We know that the technical possibilities of supply have decreased now,” Peskov said, adding that European sanctions are preventing Nord Stream 1 equipment from being repaired in time.

Peskov said Gazprom will be able to increase supplies when the maintenance is finished. “Gazprom has been and remains a reliable guarantor of all its obligations but cannot guarantee supplies if foreign equipment cannot be maintained due to European sanctions,” he said.
