The Kremlin today called “positive” the statements of US President Joe Biden, who yesterday said he was in favor of holding talks and continuing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis between Russia and the West over Ukraine.
“It is positive that the US president is in favor of serious negotiations,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov.
According to him, the talks are expected to be “very difficult”. Russia’s view is that these should lead to a reorganization of the European security architecture that emerged from the Cold War.
“It will be difficult, it will take a lot of flexibility on both sides and political will,” Peshkov said.
Moscow is calling for an end to NATO enlargement policy and for the Alliance to pledge not to develop offensive weapons near Russian territory, but also to move its infrastructure away from Eastern Europe.
The West has rejected these demands and in return has proposed talks on other issues such as arms control, reciprocal visits to sensitive infrastructure and talks on Russia’s security concerns.
At the same time, Peshkov denied today that Russia is involved in any way in the cyber-attacks targeting many websites of the Ukrainian army and two state-owned banks of the country.
“Russia has nothing to do with any cyber-attacks,” the Kremlin spokesman said, adding that “it was expected that Ukraine would continue to blame Russia for everything.”
