Moscow has backed the initiative by former Afghan President Hamid Karzai and has repeatedly made reassuring statements about the Taliban, even outlining their stance.

Former Vice President Amrullah Saleh, for his part, had said he would not surrender to the Taliban and retreated to the Panjir Valley.

On Monday, a photo posted on social media showed him with Ahmad Massoud in the area where they appear to have laid the foundation stone of a resistance movement.

This hard-to-reach valley never fell to the Taliban during the 1990s civil war, nor a decade earlier during the Soviet occupation of the country.

Ahmed Massoud’s father, Ahmed Shah Massoud, nicknamed the “Panjir Lion”, was a hero of the resistance against the Soviets and then fought against the Taliban, before being killed in an attack two days before the terrorist attacks. September 2001.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Ahmad Massoud had called for US arms and ammunition support for his militia in Afghanistan to counter the Taliban.
