The Kremlin announced today that it welcomes his proposal Vatican to provide a negotiating platform to resolve the war in Ukraine, but argues that Kiev’s position is hindering the effort. Russia accuses Ukraine of leaving no room for talks by excluding the president Vladimir Putin, but Kyiv refuses to cede territory it has seized in agreement with the West that Moscow is implementing an imperial-style land grab. Pope Francis frequently mentions Ukraine in his public appearances and has warned several times that the crisis risks sparking the use of nuclear weaponsn with uncontrollable global consequences. Last month, the Pope for the first time called on Putin himself to stop “the spiral of violence and death” in Ukraine.
