KTEL: Next stop… Elionas and Larissa Station

Eleni Bota’s

Reform of the traffic network and significant benefits for the passenger public will be just some of the benefits from the construction of the new KTEL central station in Eleonas, as well as the reform of the capital’s central railway station, also known as Larissa Station.

The new station in Eleonas, which counts 25 years as a model project, is considered of utmost importance for the prefecture of Attica. Its budget is estimated at 100 million euros.

The new KTEL bus terminal in Eleonas is currently served by two intercity bus stations in Kifissos and Liosion, which are operating having exceeded their capacity, while access to them is by car, taxi or city buses.

The opening of the super-station is expected to decongest central arteries, such as Liosion Street, Kifissou Avenue, but also Alexandras Avenue and the peripheral roads around Karaiskaki Square.

Based on the relevant planning, the new KTEL central station in Eleonas, which will resemble the terminal of a large airport, will have a total area of 40,000 sq.m. It is expected to become a “landmark” for Athens, as it will be the most modern building not only in Greece, but also worldwide.

The station, according to the plans, will include 11,750 m2 of commercial space, 1,500 m2 of cultural interest, 572 parking spaces and 20,000 m2 of free green space.

This is an important investment, which will offer benefits firstly to the passenger public, to domestic and international transport, to the workers, but also to the region, as it will give a development impetus to the wider area of Eleonas, while at the same time it will relieve the neighborhoods that currently host the facilities of the two KTEL.

According to the design, the station’s core functions also include a parcel handling center, commercial uses of offices, shops, a convention center and exhibition spaces, as well as a tourism unit.

The owner of the 90-acre property is Attiko Metro, as the site is located near the company’s existing depot and almost next to the “Elaionas” Metro station, having already received zoning for this purpose from the relevant Presidential Decree for Elaionas, which issued in 2005.

Larissa Station

The renovation of the capital’s central railway station, also known as Larissa Station, enters the final stage of implementation, with the signing of the contract for the second phase of development of the Athens Railway Station.

The second phase of the development of the Central Railway Station of Athens, with a study budget of 42.1 million euros (including VAT), will be completed within a three-year horizon. The project concerns the readjustment of the grammar, reconstruction of its functional elements (docks, pedestrian crossings, etc.), installation of electrification and parallel construction of the necessary infrastructure (foundations) for the building projects that will be completed in the future.

The consortium Intrakat – Railway Projects – Athens Station was declared the contractor of the project, with the distinctive title “Consortium Athens Station”.

Co-financing has been secured for the project from European Union funds, from the NSRF 2014-2020, within the Operational Program “Transport Infrastructures, Environment and Sustainable Development” (EP-YMEPERAA).

Specifically, the project concerns:

– Complete construction of new platforms No. 1, 2 and 3 (of the new lines No. 1 to No. 6) of SS. of Athens after the temporary shelters and the IT works that make the docks functional.

– Construction of the infrastructure of lines 1 to 6 of the S.S. Athens.

– Installation of electrification on lines 1 to 6 of the Athens S.S.

– Completion of the construction of the Underground Passage of the station with the stairs, the elevators and the connection with the “Larisis” Station of Attiko Metro S.A.

– Removal of the old underground pedestrian crossing and completion of the construction of the new small Pedestrian Underpass.

– Construction of three metal Overpasses within the boundaries of SS. Athens.

– Completion of the uneven junction of Pelopos street at the entrance of S.S. Athens.

– Completion of the construction of the Lower Vehicular and Pedestrian Crossing of Domokou Street at the exit of S.S. Athens.

– Construction of the remaining electromechanical installations of the S.S. of Athens (electrical lighting, elevators, pumping stations).

– Reforming the traffic network of the wider area with the construction of road works, hydraulic works, restoration of facilities and buildings, green works and fencing of the SS. of Athens, which are absolutely necessary to ensure the functionality of the existing railway corridor.

This project, according to ERGOSE, will solve a decades-old problem and put an end to the suffering of passengers, as there will finally be an underground connection of the Athens Metro to the city’s central railway station. With the completion of the Metro connection works and the construction of new platforms, the capital will have a modern and efficient station, providing European-level rail services.
