Kuleba declared about Lukashenka’s “historical mistakes” in the European Union. Brussels echoes the head of the Foreign Ministry

Despite the “historical mistakes” of the current regime in Belarus, Ukraine will not stop supporting the people of this country. In response to the statement of the regime of the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko about the severance of ties with the European Union, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba writes about this on Twitter.

According to the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, it is possible to announce the withdrawal from the Eastern Partnership, “but the geography cannot be changed, because the people of Belarus” historically belonged and belong to our European family of peoples. ”

“We will continue to support him, no matter how long it takes to correct the historical mistakes of Alexander Lukashenko,” Kuleba summed up.

The Eastern Partnership is an EU foreign policy project to develop the bloc’s integration ties with Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The last three have signed an Association Agreement with the EU. Following the 2020 presidential elections, which the EU did not recognize, and the ensuing repression of the opposition in Belarus, Brussels imposed sanctions against the Lukashenka regime. At the end of June 2021, Minsk announced its withdrawal from the project with the EU.

The head of EU foreign policy Josep Borrell later wrote about the same on Twitter. He stressed that despite the decision of the Lukashenka regime on the Eastern Partnership, the bloc “is ready to continue working with the people of Belarus to strengthen ties, develop regional cooperation and solve common problems.”

“The EU has imposed sanctions for violations of fundamental rights, democracy and violent repression. We reject the retaliatory actions of the Lukashenka dictatorship, which have neither legality nor foundation. -EU diplomat.
