Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba once again called it a strategic mistake by Germany and France to oppose Ukraine’s accession to NATO in 2008.
Today the country is paying for this mistake, he argued. “If we were a NATO member, this war would not have happened,” Kouleba said in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press.
The head of the Ukrainian diplomacy also criticized Germany for not supporting Ukraine as much as the government in Kyiv would like, because it still distinguishes between defensive and offensive weapons.
“If we had not wasted so much time discussing defense (weapons) against attackers, what Ukraine needs and does not need, we would be in a different position now, in a much stronger position,” he insisted.
Mr Kuleba also said his country was proposing a “fair deal” with NATO and the West. “You are supplying us with what we need. And we are fighting on your behalf so that you do not have to get involved in the conflict if (Russian President Vladimir Putin) decides to try Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization by attacking a NATO member state.” he said.
He also assured that the Ukrainians know “how to fight” and that what they need are weapons. Referring to the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Kiev region and the expected large-scale Russian operation in the eastern part of the country, he said “Ukraine has won the battle of Kiev. Now comes another battle, the battle for Donbass.”
