The iconic blue guitar used by Kurt Cobain in the music video for the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, by Nirvanain the 1990s, will be auctioned next month, with an estimated price of US$ 800 thousand (about R$ 3.8 million)
With “Smells Like Teen Spirit” racking up more than 1.4 billion views on YouTube, the blue 1969 Fender is arguably one of rock’s most famous, said Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions.
“This is one of the most iconic guitars to come up for auction, the blue Mustang Fender guitar, one of Kurt Cobain’s favorites,” said Nolan, alongside an exhibit of Kurt Cobain memorabilia at Julien’s Auction’s in Beverly Hills.
“The guitar comes with its original case and also the guitar strap, so it’s very important for collectors when they go to auction to know the originality,” Nolan said, noting that the guitar has stayed with the family since Cobain’s death. in 1994.
Cobain’s guitar is the star of the auction house’s “Icons of Music” auction, which runs in New York and online May 20-22.
Nolan said the auction house conservatively estimated a price range for the guitar of $600,000 to $800,000, but noted that “this is a very conservative auction estimate.”
Part of the profits goes to a mental health charity.
