The Austrian Chancellor expressed his satisfaction with the way the EU external borders were guarded by Greece Sebastian Kurtz, at a press conference following a meeting he had in Belgrade with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Referring to the situation in Afghanistan and the possibility of a new wave of migration to Europe, he assessed that it will not be repeated what happened in 2015.
“Today, at the external borders of the EU, these phenomena are better dealt with, the approach is different than it was in 2015, when with European resources, ie money of European taxpayers, immigrants were forwarded through Greece to other European countries. That has changed, Greece is now making a significant contribution, by making great efforts, to guarding the EU’s external borders, “said Sebastian Kurtz. He also stressed that “the way of thinking has changed within the European Union itself” and described as happy and crucial the fact that “Germany in the meantime has reconsidered its attitude towards immigration”.
Sebastian Kurtz urged all Western Balkan countries to contribute to the effort to prevent new migratory flows, noting that they will have the support and assistance of the European Union
The Austrian Chancellor expressed the view that those leaving Afghanistan should be hosted in neighboring countries. “At the moment there are no large migratory flows, but if they occur these people should be hosted in neighboring countries and not promoted to Europe. That is why there must be co-ordination and co-operation in the effective protection of Europe’s borders to prevent illegal immigration and trafficking, “said Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who is paying an official visit to Belgrade.
