In the annulment of the results of the parliamentary elections, held in Kuwait last September, the Constitutional Court went ahead, deciding that the previous Parliament should be restored.
The decision comes at a time of resurgent tensions between the elected parliament and the government. Last year Kuwait’s crown prince dissolved parliament to end political strife and called early elections, in which opposition members made gains.
Since the September elections, opposition won 28 of the 50 seats and therefore a parliamentary majority.
It’s about victory of opposition figuresmany of which have not participated in elections in the past decade accusing the executive of meddling in parliament.
“The Constitutional Court of Kuwait issued today a decision annulling the results of the 2022 parliamentary elections due to inconsistencies in the decree that dissolved the previous parliament”the official KUNA news agency reported.
Also, the court ruled in favor of restoring the parliamentary body elected in 2020 but it was disbanded by order of the crown prince, KUNA reported.
Lawyer Nawaf Al-Yasin said the court’s decision follows many objections to the election result.
Kuwait is the only Gulf Arab state with a fully elected parliament. One of the world’s largest oil exporters, it adopted a parliamentary system in 1962.
But repeated political crises have led to paralysis of the public sector and frequent clashes with the government.
In January, Kuwait’s government resigned just three months after being sworn in due to disagreements with lawmakers, the sixth government in just three years.
