Kuwaitis at the polls for the first time under the new emir

Kuwaitis are voting today to elect the first parliament of the kingdom of Emir Sheikh Messal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, in the third parliamentary election in three years in the oil-rich Gulf state, which has faced successive political judgments. Some 835,000 voters are called on to choose 50 MPs from 200 candidates, 13 of whom are women, after the opposition-dominated National Assembly elected eight months earlier was dissolved in February. The polling stations opened at noon (local and Greek time) and will close at midnight.
