An important step for the protection of wildlife from poisoned baits is made with the Joint Ministerial Decision of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakos, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Stelios Petsas, the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection, Eleftherios Economos, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food , Simos Kedikoglou, and the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Giorgos Amyras.
With the KYA, the measures and procedures taken at the local level by the competent services for the management of incidents of poisoning of wild animals in the countryside are determined, as well as the procedures for investigating and identifying the perpetrators.
Also, the drawing up of a Local Action Plan is foreseen, based on which the contact points for its immediate activation are determined, as well as the specialized actions undertaken by each person involved, which include:
1 Actions to control and investigate incidents of illegal use of poisoned baits.
2 Registration of all poisoning incidents in a database.
3 Official report of the incident to the Greek Police/Forestry Service.
4 Carrying out necropsies and sampling and actions to prosecute the illegal use of poisoned baits.
5 Intensification of guarding measures in areas with frequent incidents of poisoning, as it is foreseen the possibility of carrying out joint patrols by forest officials with the Private Game Wardens of the Hunting Organizations and the guards of the Protected Areas Management Units of OFYPEKA.
6 Staff training.
7 Informing land users (breeders, farmers, hunters, beekeepers, etc.) and raising public awareness.
8 Utilization of the electronic database for the electronic marking of companion animals.
Finally, special reference is made to the KYA for the operation of the special units for the detection of poisoned baits. It is recalled that at the beginning of June, the training of five Belgian shepherd dogs was completed, which, under the guidance of their handlers, will assist in preventive patrols to detect and remove poisoned baits.
The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Giorgos Amyras, said: “The Joint Ministerial Decision strengthens our fight against the use of poisoned baits. Together with the special patrol units, with the five Belgian shepherds, we are creating another shield for the wild fauna, protecting biodiversity and ecosystems”.
