Kyiv and Moscow blamed each other for the attacks around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the U.S. of the UN

Russia and Ukraine once again accused each other at a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday of endangering the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, while an official of the organization called on them to stop all military activity around it.

“Ukrainian armed forces continue to shell the site of the nuclear power plant practically every day, creating a real risk of a nuclear accident that will have devastating consequences for the entire European continent,” complained Russia’s UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, who had request the convening of the Council.

He asked the Westerners to “stop covering for their Ukrainian protégés”. “We have the impression that our colleagues are living in a parallel reality in which the Russian army is itself bombing the location it is protecting,” said Nebenzia.

“No one can imagine that Ukraine would target a nuclear power plant, creating a huge risk of nuclear destruction on its own soil,” replied Ukrainian ambassador Serhii Kislitsia.

“Once again (Russia) has the audacity to call a meeting of the Security Council to discuss its own provocations and its own acts of terrorism,” he added, adding that “I wasted an hour listening to a bunch of fantastic statements.”

The two countries say they are ready to allow a team of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors access to the nuclear plant, but no mission is currently planned.

“It is really important that this mission takes place so that the international community can see what is really happening and not a Russian play,” Kislitsia underlined.

His Russian counterpart also said he was relying on the IAEA to “confirm the real situation”.

For her part, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, reiterated that it is necessary for the two sides to “cease all military activity around the nuclear plant”.

DiCarlo — echoing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who has called any attack on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant “suicidal” — called on Russia and Ukraine to show “common sense.”

At the same time, she expressed her concern about “the almost daily information about alarming events” concerning the nuclear plant.

Following a request mainly from the US, France and Britain, another meeting of the Security Council is scheduled for this morning (New York time) on the occasion of six months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
