Kyiv is asking for Ukraine’s ‘de facto’ accession to NATO to be discussed

NATO should consider granting Ukraine “de facto” rather than “de jure” membership at a June meeting to discuss the Alliance’s strategy for the next 10 years, the Ukrainian Defense Minister said today. , Oleksiy Reznikov.

In particular, as reported by Reuters, speaking at the GLOBSEC 2022 Forum in Bratislava via teleconference, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense said that “I think that if we talk about Ukraine’s accession to NATO, a de facto and not de jure participation could be a good idea in this strategy”.

He added that “Ukraine will participate in this strategy because we are also the eastern wing of Europe, the eastern wing of NATO countries, the eastern wing of the EU.”

“I think it will be a win-win situation for all countries,” Oleksiy Reznikov said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the defense minister said Ukrainian crews had begun training in Europe to use US artillery systems, and expressed hope that the Russians would be expelled from the occupied territories by the end of the year.
