Ukraine’s capital renamed 95 streets today as part of an effort to “cleanse” Russian and Soviet names, Kyiv’s mayor announced, a day after the country celebrated 31 years of independence.
Since Russia’s invasion in February, Ukrainian authorities have stepped up “de-Russianisation”, a campaign to erase the legacy of centuries of rule by Moscow.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram that the new names will honor important historical events as well as the memory of famous people and heroes who “glorified Ukraine and fought for the independence of our state.” He added that this process is still far from complete and promised that it will continue.
A street was named “London” to honor the capital of Britain, one of Ukraine’s closest allies. Another was called “Ukrainian Renaissance Street,” echoing President Volodymyr Zelensky’s declaration that Ukraine was “reborn” when Russia invaded.
Another road, named after a Soviet defense minister, was named “Azov Battalion Road”, a decision expected to anger Moscow. Russia accuses the group of fascist, far-right ideology and has labeled it a “terrorist organization”.
