Kyiv: Trident replaces Soviet hammer and sickle at ‘Motherland’ statue

With the national trident, the coat of arms of Ukraine, the authorities of Kiev replaced the emblem of the Soviet Union with the hammer and sickle, which was on the monument of “Mother Country“, down town.

The Ukrainian authorities had announced since last year that the hammer and sickle would be replaced by the trident.

The national trident of Ukraine was placed today at the monument depicting the Motherland in Kyiv, replacing the Soviet symbols in one of the most visible examples of the country’s departure from Moscow’s past and influence.

The work of the Ukrainians on the complete installation of the trident they started on Saturday but they were completed 24 hours later due to strong winds.

The monument, a 62-meter-tall steel statue of a female warrior, was built in 1981 on top of a hill on the right bank of the Dnipro River.
