Kyiv: ‘We released 5 Ukrainian prisoners in occupied Kherson’

Five Ukrainians held captive by the Russian army in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine have been freed in a “special operation” by the Ukrainian military intelligence service, Kyiv announced today.

“During a special operation (…) in the temporarily occupied territories of the Kherson region, five Ukrainian citizens held captive by the Russian occupiers were released,” the Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR) said in a statement.

According to this announcement, the operation was carried out by GUR special forces and the five freed are a soldier, an ex-policeman and three civilians.

“One of the freedmen suffered serious battle wounds,” GUR added, without saying whether he was injured during the operation. “They are now under the protection of the Ukrainian authorities and receiving appropriate treatment,” added the Ukrainian service.

The Ukrainian military has launched a counteroffensive in recent weeks on the Kherson front, the area of which has been almost entirely occupied by the Russian military since the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24.

This morning Kyiv announced it had struck Russian military units and an ammunition depot in the town of Nova Kahovka, about 60 km east of Kherson, claiming to have killed 52 Russian soldiers there.

Russian occupation authorities in the area claimed seven people were killed and around 60 wounded.

At the same time, operations are also being conducted behind Russian lines, mainly targeting local officials appointed by Moscow, many of whom have been the target of bombings in recent weeks.
