Kyiv will not reopen the Sokhranovka gas pipeline until it gains control of it

Ukraine will not reopen the Sokhranovka gas pipeline route from Russia to European customers until Kyiv gains control of the gas transit system, the head of the GTSOU system operator told Reuters on Thursday.

The pipeline through this crossing point passes through the Luhansk region of Ukraine, part of which has been under the control of Russian-backed divers since 2014.

Sergiy Makogon said there was enough capacity for Russian state-owned gas giant Gazprom to deliver all the quantities bound for Europe via the Sudzha transit route, which remains open.

He also said that Gazprom was unaware that Moscow-backed insurgents in eastern Ukraine had begun stealing gas from Ukraine, which Kyiv said was one of the reasons for announcing “force majeure”. (force majeure) in gas flows through Sokhranovka.
