Seven people, most of them children, died in mudslides that hit Kyrgyzstan, authorities in the mountainous Central Asian country, a region on the frontline of climate change, announced Saturday. According to the Ministry of Emergencies, “seven people are dead in the Nukat district”, among them five children, born between 2008 and 2016. The same source clarified that at least 1,300 people on vacation in the affected area were hurriedly evacuated from there by the last night Friday. Yesterday’s tragedy was announced some twenty-four hours after the death of a five-year-old child in a similar disaster. Central Asia, a region particularly vulnerable to climate change, is frequently hit by floods, landslides, avalanches and fires.
