Kyriakidou: Health security must be a collective European effort

The Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakidou stressed that “a strengthened European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority is the focus of a strong European Health Union that can respond quickly and effectively to emergencies” following the Council’s political agreement on a regulation allowing emergency and targeted countermeasures by HERA.

Mr. Kyriakidou, as broadcast by APE-MPE, noted that “HERA must be fully operational as soon as possible and the current political agreement in the Council is a key step in this direction.” At the same time, he pointed out that this is the “shield” of the EU “against future health threats”.

“The current pandemic has highlighted the crucial role of EU coordination “and cooperation in every phase of the pandemic, from dealing with the crisis to recovery,” she said.

She added the importance of ensuring that there are “the right tools” for emergencies.

“Covid-19 woke us up”

Stella Kyriakidou mentioned that “COVID-19 was a wake-up call that no country alone can meet all the challenges associated with cross-border health threats. “Readiness must become part and parcel of our approach to health policy.”

The commissioner stressed that “Health security must be a collective European effort – for our Member States and with our Member States.”

“IERA is a real European effort” of the EU in health policy, concluded Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou.
