La Ghey, interview with the faceless Milanese influencer

Historically, largely due to social media platforms, we’ve probably never been so bombarded by images and identity, now merged into a single public domain entity. Talking about oneself through a personal account to give space to one’s story has almost become an automatic reflection of contemporaneity: therefore it is very difficult to imagine, especially on a social network like Instagram, a type of communication that does not have to do with one visual storytelling.
However, as powerful as images can be, in Italy – and precisely, a Milano – a new character has shown how much the parole they can be equally effective, if not even more impactful, in evoking the common imagination. Let’s talk about de La Ghey, account born a handful of months ago and which, in all its simplicity and without showing any face, has taken up and launched a real catchphrase: periods in the third person singular, built in a reflexive form, which they allow anyone to identify with their small and daily events (in the gallery), from the “two fresh flowers” that you bought on Saturday morning to the necessary rinsing to the dishes before putting everything in the dishwasher. Turning to vital issues, such as access to the clearance sale of Prada without which he would have fainted. Without revealing his identity, we had the pleasure of chatting with La Ghey on some very topical topics, from the current semi-lockdown to the upcoming Milan Fashion Week.

Let’s start from the beginning: how was the concept of La Ghey born?

«It all started from the desire to create a space in which, instead of making the page owner, the influencer on duty, the protagonist, it was the followers themselves who felt at the center of the narrative. Hence the idea of a blue image, clear and without frills, which is the background to a very concise and reflexive content – which has now become viral in Milan – allowing the reader to identify instantly with the reference context. I think that’s why the page is so popular and growing: it’s not yet another account that revolves around a person’s identity, and it leaves everyone the freedom to identify themselves. Ghey does not want to appear for this very reason, to leave room for the reader to identify with situations, frivolities and clichés lightly ».

What is La Ghey’s daily routine in this semi-lockdown period?

“Ghey wakes up with all the calm of the world, unless she has to take the kids to school – if she has any and at least every now and then – and then goes out for a walk with her little dog wearing sweatpants, designer sneakers and, of course, his camel coat. Before returning home he goes to the florist, takes a takeaway coffee and on Wednesdays, at the newsstands, La Ghey the new issue of Vanity Fair if you buy it. Once home, he prepares for his yoga class at City ZEN via Zoom and then starts working in smart working. Clearly she deals with fashion, and when she is able to work in the office she arrives punctually out of breath, telling everything that has happened before – whether it’s true or not, it is not known – and that made her late as usual. For lunch, he gets Lon Fon to bring something light and in the afternoon, from home during this period and after work in general, a trip to the analyst does.

Here we touch on an important point: How does Ghey live this period, without the social events that are of vital importance to her?

«Eh, La Ghey is not doing well. She misses weaving her relationships, having her dinners and her aperitifs. So at the moment she just goes to the psychologist, go to Esselunga, get a hairdo at the hairdresser to feel good about herself even at home, take the dog to the grooming etc. The day goes by quite quickly, so in the evening she puts together a dinner for herself and possibly for her partner and curfew time has already arrived. Even in the orange and red zone La Ghey is always late and never has time ».

Even if you cannot reveal your identity, we would like to know more about who is behind La Ghey: self-irony is your winning weapon, is it also for you?

“Ghey is certainly ironic while I, despite being a fairly exuberant and outgoing person, in real life feel a bit heavy (ride). We are two separate entities that for now I would like to remain so, but I certainly enjoy using this tool to lighten everyday situations: it is something I do for passion and when I feel inspired, and moreover I do not follow any editorial calendar even if many tell me that I should share more. I prefer the spontaneity of the moment ».

On what is it absolutely impossible for La Ghey to make irony?

“When the subject of ex is touched, or exes come back to the surface, for La Ghey there is no longer any irony. As you well know, she is not exactly lucky in relationships, but she also goes looking for them: as soon as she smells a high rate of toxicity in a possible bond, she dives and wallows in it until the situation becomes unmanageable. After that, having reached the status of ex, he no longer wants to hear about it: the ex must be kept away, physically and verbally “.

How is La Ghey put from a TV and TV series point of view? What do you like to watch (even secretly)?

«As you can imagine, La Ghey went crazy at the news of the reboot of Sex & The City, igniting the debate on Samantha Jones’ absence with her friends. Among his favorite series there is certainly Euphoria – although he has yet to watch the latest extra episode that came out a few weeks ago – and one of his latest obsessions is The Undoing, given the crazy looks of the protagonist. As far as television is concerned, La Ghey is often tuned to Channel 5, but if you ask him he will deny it until he dies ».

Milan Fashion Week will be held soon: what will La Ghey comment or share with more pleasure?

«All eyes on Prada: La Ghey goes completely crazy for the duo formed by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons. But also on Versace, because La Medusa is iconic and timeless, and obviously awaits with trepidation the first collection by Kim Jones for Fendi. During the fashion week all the live shows will be followed to immediately catch sight of the most iconic – and ferocious, imagining already darting around the city with some of those items – and then share her selection on Instagram. And, in addition to the most well-known brands, it also looks forward to the news and designers who pursue a unique and genderless vision, such as Andrea Adamo and Christian Boaro ».
