La Niña led to drop in grain production in southern Brazil, says expert

Brazilian grain production in the 2021/22 harvest could reach 268.2 million tons. If the volume is confirmed, it will be a 5% growth compared to the previous season. The estimate is from a survey by the National Supply Company (Conab) released this week.

In an interview with CNNthe director of Conab, Sergio de Zen, stated that grain productivity in the country has faced opposite scenarios of records and losses.

“With the country being continental like Brazil, we had two extremes: we are harvesting a crop with very high productivity in Mato Grosso and in the region of Maranhão, Piauí, Tocantins and Bahia, which we call Matopiba, we are having record productivity. Goiás is also in this role. Because the weather helped and was perfect for them, using technology,” he said.

On the other hand, the performance of the current harvest is impacted by the severe drought that affects the states of the southern region of the country and the center-south of Mato Grosso do Sul.

“This southern region of Brazil and the south of Mato Grosso do Sul were affected by a climatic factor that is cyclical, La Niña, and with that we had a sharp drop in productivity and mainly heterogeneous in these regions”, he said.

The specialist adds that soybeans should register a production of around 125 million tons, a drop of around 9% compared to the previous harvest.

“We expected to reach close to 140 million tons of soybeans and now we forecast 125 million, a little more than that, as a result of this crop failure in southern Brazil,” he said.
