La Repubblica: Its iconic founder, Eugenio Scalfari, has died

The iconic Italian journalist and founder of the newspaper died today at the age of 98 La Repubblica, Eugenio Scalfari. In 1955 he contributed to the publication of the weekly magazine L’Espresso and 12 years laterwith his journalistic investigation, denounced a plan for a military, far-right coup in Italy. After a year, in 1968, he was elected as an independent MP, on the ballots of the Italian Socialist Party.

In 1976 Scalfari created the newspaper La Repubblica, of which he also became director. With direct texts, critical spirit, unique sketches, the newspaper becomes a point of reference in the Italian progressive space, and first in circulation, for a number of years. Many commentators speak of a “real revolution in the field of Italian and European journalism” as reported by the APE-MPE correspondent.

In his unique career, he radically criticized both the actions of the Italian former socialist prime minister, Bettino Craxi, and Silvio Berlusconi, starting with the incompatibility of his business and political actions.

In 1996 he resigned from the management of the newspaper he had created and imposes on the Italian political, social and cultural reality. He continued to work and write until recently, securing, among other thingsand two exclusive, in-depth interviews with Pope Francis.
