At the height of her 33 years, the influencer and model Mariana Michelini decided to perform a facial harmonization procedure to improve her appearance and raise her self -esteem, an essential aspect for her career. However, what should be an improvement has become a nightmare.
After undergoing the procedure performed by an unqualified professional, Mariana suffered a severe deformation on her lips, losing the top. The procedure took place in 2020, in the city of Matão, interior of São Paulo.
“My life stopped and I thought it was going to die. In addition to affecting my career, it destroyed my self -esteem. I spent a year living with intense pain and trying to reverse the swelling. I always needed to wear mask, and it has affected me deeply ”

Mariana’s case reflects a worrying reality in Brazil: the increase in the number of complications arising from aesthetic procedures performed by professionals without proper qualification.
According to the Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO), the number of dental surgeons specializing in facial harmonization grew 50% in 12 months. In December 2023, there were 2,675 registered professionals in the area, a number that jumped to 4,012 in 2024.
Sector entities reinforce the need for more rigorous supervision to avoid serious complications and even patient deaths.
The president of the Brazilian Association of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics (ABRA), Carla Derech, guides the population to seek for qualified professionals.
“The approach recommends that patients are treated within the best scientific evidence by walking a path that stimulates ethics and health care for the population. Look for good references as your trusted dentist, who can indicate a good expert to take care of the health of your smile and institutions that aim to protect the population. ”
Experts heard by CNN point out that the growing offer of aesthetic courses by various educational institutions, combined with high demand for procedures, have led to the proliferation of professionals without adequate qualification.
Orthodontics dentist Renata Salum points out that specialization is essential for the professional to be prepared to deal with possible complications and reduce risks during procedures.
“It is necessary to consider that many of the courses available on the market do not have adequate quality or accreditation. Some institutions offer formations without the necessary infrastructure or without a solid practical basis. This can leave the professional unprepared to deal with complex situations that arise during the procedures, ”says Salum.
Anvisa tries to avoid impacts
To reduce the number of unsuccessful procedures, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has launched a website with public guidelines.
The portal gathers information about products approved by the agency, as well as listing those prohibited. It also offers guidelines on how to report problems or report irregularities.
In addition, Anvisa issued a technical note to guide clinics on health standards. In the document, the agency classifies establishments in two categories:
- Health Services: require procedures to be performed by medical professionals or under their supervision;
- Services of health interest: do not require health training to perform the activities.
The agency stresses that the beautician profession is not recognized as a health category, and must follow specific safety, hygiene and waste disposal rules. In addition, it points out that the use of drugs in aesthetic clinics without medical supervision is prohibited.
Recovery
The physical and emotional impacts of an unsuccessful aesthetic procedure are deep. In the case of Mariana, her facial reconstruction began just four years later, in November 2024.
“I don’t discourage anyone to do aesthetic procedures, but I recommend that they research well before choosing a qualified professional,” warns the influencer.
The reconstruction was performed in stages: first, the middle of the upper lip was created, requiring Mariana to be 20 days with the sewn mouth. In the second phase, his tongue was sewn to the affected region to assist in healing. The same process was repeated on the other side of the lip.
The fourth step was dedicated to the reconstruction of the lower lip. The treatment lasted about a year and was finalized in December 2024 in the city of Araranguá, Santa Catarina. Despite the difficulties, Mariana did not lose his taste buds, but reports that her tongue got a little smaller.
Now its next step will be a dermatological follow -up for aesthetic refinement, including filling with hyaluronic acid to restore lip volume.
“I’ve always kept the positive thinking and I’m still like that. Today I am better, I no longer need to wear the mask and I am trying to resume my social life. I keep believing there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I’m being cared for by great professionals and I’m sure everything will improve more and more, ”said Mariana.
