The State Secretary of Health of Santa Catarina, Aldo Baptista Neto, said that the decree of emergency situation in the state happens in the midst of a sum of factors.
In an interview with CNN Radio he said that 30 days ago, through the state service of bed regulation, an overload began to be noticed in neonatal and pediatric beds.
“There was a demand for babies and children with respiratory problems, we went to the municipalities and saw that primary care was at its limit and we discovered that the state has never vaccinated so little at the end of the campaigns, of all types of vaccine.”
In addition to this sum of events, the secretary also cited a bigger problem: dengue. “We have never seen a dengue epidemic like this, with 50,000 cases and 47 deaths.”
“Allied to Covid-19, all diseases compete for the same line of care, hence the overload and enactment of an emergency system for legal certainty for state and municipal managers and to increase the offer of health care”, he added.
According to the secretary, today, all age groups are being impacted by the overcrowding of health services.
The government’s expectation is to expand the health system, until August, when the decree ends, in another 77 ICU beds.
“If there is a need, if we arrive in August with the same situation, we extend the emergency situation for another 90 days, the focus is on the coldest period, which brings more respiratory diseases”.
