More than 800 jihadists have been killed in two months in the islands of Lake Chad, on the border with Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Chad, in Joint Multinational Force (ISM) operations in those countries, its administration announced on Tuesday.
From March 28 to June 4, the UNHCR carried out an operation, dubbed “Lake Sanity”, on the islands of Lake Chad and adjacent areas, in order to “neutralize” terrorist groups of Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa (IKDA) “, it is explained in a report that came yesterday in the possession of the French Agency.
According to the MPD, the operation was a “success”, as “805 terrorists were neutralized” (s.s .: killed), “44 vehicles, 22 motorcycles and a number of heavy and light weapons” were destroyed or confiscated.
About 3,000 troops were involved in air, land and naval operations, initially conducted by units in Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria and then, “45 days” after their launch, in Chad, according to the document.
A “large” amount of ammunition was also confiscated, while laboratories where “improvised explosive devices” were made were “destroyed”.
According to the MPD report, its own casualties are about twenty wounded, with only one soldier in serious condition.
In the basin of Lake Chad, which rains Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad, vast expanses of water and swamps, are Boko Haram and IKDA hideouts, by definition difficult to locate on the countless islands.
The IAEA was initially formed by the armed forces of the four countries, as well as Benin, in 1994. It was reactivated in 2015.
The Boko Haram uprising broke out in 2009 in Nigeria and spread to neighboring countries. The United Nations estimates that more than 36,000 people, mostly in Nigeria, have been killed and more than 3 million displaced by jihadist and repressive operations.
