Landing in Normandy: Event in the presence of the last surviving French commando who took part in the operation

THE France commemorated today the 79th anniversary of the landing of allied forces in Normandy presence of the president Macronas well as the hundred-year-old Leon Gauthier, the last survivor of the group of 177 French commandos who took part in the military operation.

During the relevant ceremony, which took place in the Calvados region, the 21 men who successfully passed the commando selection tests this year in France received their green berets.

The first of them received the green beret from Gauthier, according to the Athens News Agency, while the others were handed over by Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne and Minister of Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornou.

The French commando group that took part in the Normandy landings was called Kieffer, trained in Scotland and its members used to wear berets “lying on the right” on their heads, with the badge on the left.
