Landslide at resort in Bariloche leaves three Uruguayan tourists dead

Three Uruguayan tourists died in Bariloche, Argentina as a result of a landslide that affected three rooms and a corridor of a tourist complex.

The Public Ministry of Bariloche confirmed that, during the early hours of this Wednesday (8), rescuers found the lifeless bodies of two Uruguayan tourists who were missing after the incident, which happened on Monday (6) afternoon in the tourist complex of Villa Huinid Bustillo.

Both were found in the rooms where they were staying and transferred to the local IML for an autopsy, the authorities said in a statement.

These victims join another Uruguayan tourist who died after being trapped inside one of the hotel’s rooms and was found on Tuesday (7), according to Patricia Díaz, undersecretary for civil protection in Bariloche, who also said that Another three people were injured.

“A filtration of water below the gabions, which maintained the earthen structure, generated the landslide in this place, until the mud reached the Bustillo Hotel building. It entered through the windows of the bedrooms, affecting three of them and the hallway on the first floor,” explained Díaz.

The Embassy of Uruguay in Argentina said in a statement that it is in direct contact with the victims’ families, providing all necessary support, and that they will send representatives to Bariloche to expedite the relevant procedures.

The Bariloche Public Ministry added that it “is working on all the theories in the case and evaluating the evidence to determine the circumstances that led to this fact.”
