Landslide in the interior of Amazonas leaves at least 1 dead and 4 missing

A landslide in the community of Arumã, in the municipality of Beruri (about 173 kilometers from Manaus), in the early evening of Saturday (30), left at least one person dead and four missing, according to the government of the state of Amazonas .

Another ten people with injuries were treated by health teams at the scene. The majority presented a hypertensive crisis and one person is suspected of having a fracture.

According to the state’s Civil Defense, what happened in the Aramã community is the result of the process popularly known as “fallen lands” – the sliding of ravines that are on the banks of rivers that flow in the Amazon region. It is a dynamic and complex process that involves several hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, climatic, neotectonic, lithological and anthropological factors, occurring together or separately and resulting in soil erosion.

A team of military police and state Civil Defense agents traveled to the location on Saturday night to begin providing assistance to affected residents.

For logistical reasons that prevent aircraft from landing at night in the municipality of Beruri, a second team made up of men from the Fire Department, Civil Defense, Legal Medical Institute (IML), as well as employees of the State Department of Social Assistance (Seas), Secretary of State of Justice, Human Rights and Citizenship (Sejusc), State Department of Health (SES) and Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS), can travel this Sunday (1st) to the municipality to provide the necessary assistance.

The state governor, Wilson Lima, lamented what happened in the Arumã community and determined full support in the search for the missing and assistance to residents affected by the incident.
