Thousands of people protested in many European capitals today, calling for an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and for peace to prevail.
In London, hundreds of people gathered in Trafalgar Square, holding placards with slogans such as “Putin kills” and “Complete embargo on Russia”. The crowd chanted “Stop Putin, stop the war.”
“When the last Ukrainian soldier falls, Putin will come for you, ladies and gentlemen,” read a huge banner.
The Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, recited a prayer saying “Today, we are all Ukrainians”.
In Paris, several thousand people demonstrated promising to return every weekend “until Putin leaves, to withdraw his chariots,” said Alin Le Baig-Kremer, a member of the “We Support Ukraine” group, which initiated the mobilization. .
“It’s very important that we be here,” said one protester, 47-year-old Bernard Arno, who wore a suit in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. “Putin is completely unpredictable,” he added.
“Despite our pain, we will win, we are sure,” said French-Ukrainian Natalia, who did not want to be named to protect her son, who remained in the country.
Demonstrations in support of the Ukrainians took place in about 100 cities in France today.
Large anti-war demonstrations also took place in Rome, Zurich, Bern and elsewhere. The Swiss government is expected to decide in the coming days whether to grant special protection to Ukrainian refugees fleeing war in their country.
