Large demonstration in Vienna against the restrictive measures

Thousands of protesters marched in central Vienna on Saturday, protesting against restrictive measures taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The police of its capital Austria reported that he made some arrests, some at the end of the mobilization, when several of the participants refused to disperse.

Isolated clashes have also been reported between protesters and pro-left supporters.

Most of the protesters did not wear masks and did not observe the chosen social distance on the march in the center of Vienna, towards the Prater park, where he had urged them to gather the far-right Free Party (FPÖ).

The latest restrictive measures in Austria eased in February, with the opening of schools, shops and museums. But the protesters are revolting because measures such as closing restaurants and cafes and mandatory tests for students attending classes in their schools are still being imposed.

Former FPÖ Home Secretary Herbert Kikl, in his speech, denounced to the crowd the “stupid and strange” government policy.

Protesters chanted slogans and held placards demanding the resignation of center-right Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz, or against the media, which they said was “lying”.

Members of the far right, including neo-Nazis who have taken part in most previous mobilizations against masks and other restrictive measures, were once again present, according to Austrian media.

Protests against the restrictive measures and their impact on the economy have multiplied in recent months in Austria. The government does not rule out a further easing of measures, but on the condition that the number of cases will be reduced.

But SARS-CoV-2 infections, on the other hand, have been rising on a daily basis in recent weeks. More than 2,500 cases were confirmed yesterday Saturday.

According to Health Minister Rudolf Ansober, the variant strain of the new coronavirus that was originally identified in Britain is currently the dominant one in the country.
