Firefighters and soldiers are battling to bring under control at least four fires raging in forest areas in northern Morocco, the director of the Center for the Management of Climatic Forest Risks (CRCF), Fouad Assali, said.
The fires, fueled by strong winds, are raging in the provinces of Lara, Ouezanne, Tetouan and Taza.
Four military Canadair firefighting aircraft made drops in the afternoon near Ksar El Kebir.
Many villages were evacuated.
In the stifling heat, surprised by the rapidity with which the fire spread, the inhabitants hurried from their homes, taking cattle and horses with them when possible. A small village in the area of Ksar El Kebir was burnt to the ground, according to Agence France-Presse.
“Efforts are continuing with the hope that we will be able to bring the fires under control in the next few hours,” Assali told Moroccan news agency MAP.
Morocco has been hit by a heat wave for several days now, with temperatures approaching 45 degrees.
