Large strikes at German airports

Those traveling through German airports must now count on delays and cancellations. The warning strike of the security workers is extended.

They started as small-scale warning strikes and have already been extended to many German airports. Travelers should therefore count, at least today, on delays, long queues at the counters and flight cancellations.

The Verdi union has extended strikes following the “wreck” of three rounds of negotiations with the Federal Aviation Safety Association (BDLS) over the dispute over collective bargaining agreements.

The German union has long been negotiating new collective bargaining agreements for some 25,000 workers in the field of airport security, but the consultations have not been successful.

Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg …

The strikes started yesterday in Munich and today have also spread to the airports of Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Berlin, Cologne / Bonn, Hanover, Bremen and elsewhere.

In fact, Germany’s largest international airport, Frankfurt, is currently operated by security personnel, with employees of the passenger and commercial terminals on strike from two after midnight. Transfer flights are normal, but with delays, and many of its flights have already been canceled by Lufthansa.

Negotiations between the two sides have been deadlocked for a long time, with the recent third round having failed. What the Verdi union is asking for, however, are twelve-month employment contracts, a one-euro increase in hourly wages and an equalization of the payroll status of baggage inspectors with that of employees at passenger and ticket control.
