Largest warship in Latin America arrives in RS to help with floods

The largest warship in Latin America, the Atlantic multipurpose aerodrome, arrived this Saturday (11) in the city of Rio Grande, in the extreme south of Rio Grande do Sul, to assist in relief efforts for victims of the floods that hit the state.

With more than 150 tons of donations on board, the ship brings a reinforcement of 1,350 soldiers, in addition to fundamental resources such as 14 tons of supplies, two drinking water treatment plants, three helicopters, 35 cars and 24 small and medium-sized vessels .

Concern about levels of Laguna dos Patos

The level of Laguna dos Patos, which receives water from Rio Grande do Sul's rivers, is currently 1.41 meters above normal, according to the Federal University of Rio Grande. Around 400 people have already left their homes and are in shelters in the city.

The arrival of the ship in Rio Grande is eagerly awaited, as the city is located in the extreme south of the state, where the waters of Laguna dos Patos flow into the Atlantic Ocean through the Barra Channel. The concern is that unfavorable winds could cause the water to become dammed, worsening the situation in riverside areas.

The historic center of Rio Grande already shows signs of rising water levels, with flooded streets and squares. The expectation is that the support of the ship and its crew will help in caring for the victims and containing the damage caused by the floods.
