2022 is being marked by important and significant changes at LATAM, with the adoption of sustainable practices that positively impact the environment and society.
Within the Circular Economy pillar, LATAM is committed to being a zero waste group for landfills by 2027 and, for that, it has imposed the bold goal of eliminating all single-use plastics by 2023.
Since February, Premium Business cabins, on all regional international routes, started to receive the Eco Travel Kit , amenities made from sustainable materials, which include toothbrushes made of bamboo with a lid made of sugar cane, reusable mask and socks, paper-wrapped earplugs kraftand still, lip balm, hand cream and refreshing towel made by Brazilian artisans, totally vegan and cruelty free.
To further reduce single-use plastic materials, reusable pouches have been incorporated that hold rest items such as the soft blanket and pillow.
already in class economythe highlight goes to the products used during the in-flight service, which were previously made of plastic and have now been replaced by more sustainable materials such as bamboo fiber cutlery, reusable trays, paper packaging kraft and certified sustainable paper cups.
“Taking care of the planet is a challenge for everyone and a necessary objective for the LATAM Group. That’s why we reviewed our services and identified around 1,800 tonnes of single-use plastic on our international flights. So our teams have worked to redefine every detail of service, delivering a win-win change for our customers as well as our planet.”, says Paulo Miranda, Vice President of Customers at the LATAM Group.
According to Gislaine Rossetti, director of Institutional and Regulatory Relations at LATAM, the group is optimistic about the achievement of the established goals, as this year’s deliveries are still advanced.
“We have a long way to go to achieve our goals within a bold but necessary strategy for a more sustainable performance in our sector. However, we are gradually and structurally incorporating sustainability in all the fronts defined for our business, making more and more projects get off the ground and happen.”, he reports.
Another important initiative is the partnership with the eurecycle , a company that offers solutions for reverse packaging logistics throughout Brazil. Since March of this year, 92 tons of waste generated on board flights from 12 Brazilian airports without selective collection service have been compensated.
“The partnership allows this volume to be removed from the environment, avoiding damage to the forest, rivers and oceans and our health, in addition to economically encouraging recycling operators in these regions, with fairer remuneration for Recycling Certificates. It is an initiative that has an environmental and social impact”, explains Thiago Carvalho Pinto, co-founder and CEO of eureciclo.
Fostering the circular economy reinforces the commitment to people and the environment, LATAM believes that giving a second life to the waste generated is also committing to sustainable development, for a better world.
