The Fridays Compensam project began in March of this year and, since then, the LATAM Group has compensated, every Friday, the CO2 emissions generated by flights on nine important routes that transport passengers and cargo, two of which are in Brazil and the other seven in South American countries such as Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru.
In our country, the passenger routes for the Rio de Janeiro/Santos Dumont – São Paulo/Congonhas air bridge and the BrasÃlia – Belém cargo route entered the project. They were selected because they come from strategic regions, such as BrasÃlia, which is one of the company’s main hubs, and Belém due to the importance of its ecosystem.
How does this CO2 compensation program work in the atmosphere?
The program stipulates that each ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted on the chosen routes be compensated with a carbon credit from conservation and restoration projects supported by the company. The offset estimate by the end of 2022 is around 18 thousand tons of CO2 in Brazil and approximately 25 thousand tons of CO2 in the LATAM Group. This entire process is audited and certified to assess its performance.
This initiative is part of the LATAM sustainability strategy’s agenda to combat climate change, whose main goals are to have carbon neutral growth compared to the 2019 baseline, reduce and offset 50% of its domestic emissions by 2030 and be a carbon neutral company by 2050.
Aware of its socio-environmental responsibility, mainly because it is part of the aviation sector, which generates approximately 2% of global CO2 emissions from human activities, this LATAM project, in addition to offsetting emissions, protects strategic ecosystems, as well as their biodiversity and the local communities.
