Be a carbon neutral company by 2050 🇧🇷 The goal is bold, especially for a company in the aviation sector, which is responsible for approximately 2% of global CO2 emissions generated by human activities.
It is precisely for this reason that the LATAM Group develops several initiatives aimed at the Climate Change pillar, which is part of its sustainability strategy.
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contain global warming, it is necessary to prioritize actions that minimize the impacts generated by operations and offset CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
Aware of its relevant role in society, LATAM concentrates its efforts on fulfilling its commitments to to maintain 2019 carbon emission levels and reduce and compensate 50% of domestic emissions by 2030, establishing a path to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
On this journey, we can highlight the program LATAM Fuel Efficiency , created over 10 years ago, which includes initiatives focused on reducing fuel consumption and operational efficiency to optimize your economy. An important initiative within this program is the renewal of the fleet with the acquisition of more efficient aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which provides a 25% reduction in fuel and CO2 emissions, and the order of 70 aircraft from the Airbus A320neo family , which have more efficient engines, aerodynamic improvements and technologies that guarantee 20% less fuel consumption.
Another important step is the development of sustainable alternative fuels. In the first half of this year, the LATAM Group committed to using up to 5% of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) in its operations until 2030, prioritizing production in South America, with a focus on Brazil, Colombia and Chile, countries with recognized and long experience in the development of Biofuel and Green Hydrogen. Furthermore, LATAM is the first airline in Brazil to use electricity in ground operations. The pilot project, which involved more than R$30 million in investments, was developed in partnership with Royal Aviation and BH Airport🇧🇷
And to offset CO2 emissions, since March 2022 the project Fridays Make Up in which the carbon emissions generated by 9 emblematic routes in Brazil and other countries in South America, such as the Rio – São Paulo air shuttle and the BrasÃlia – Belém cargo route, are offset.
In August of this year, LATAM entered into an alliance with the REDD+ Jari-Amapá conservation project, which protects 65,000 hectares of the Amazon rainforest in Amapá. In a partnership with BiofÃlica Ambipar, it acquired 10,000 carbon credits that help preserve 2,500 trees, which are part of this iconic ecosystem in Brazil. It is an economic development model directly associated with conservation, improvement of carbon stocks and better forest management, avoiding deforestation and forest degradation, and promoting benefits to the climate, communities and local biodiversity.
The first credits acquired by LATAM were used to offset the emissions of 240 flights on the São Paulo (Congonhas) – Rio de Janeiro (Santos Dumont) air shuttle during the seven days of Rock in Rio Brasil 2022 and the activities of operating the company’s stand In the event. In total, more than 3,600 tons of CO2 were compensated.
