LATAM plane collides with vehicle before taking off, leaving two dead in Peru

Latam Airlines said this Friday (18) that one of its passenger planes collided with a vehicle on the runway at Jorge Chávez International Airport, in Peru, before taking off. According to the airline, two firefighters who were on the ground died.

Videos circulating on social media and on Peruvian channels show the moment of the collision.

Jorge Chavez in Lima, Peru’s most important airport, has suspended all operations and is investigating the cause of the accident, said Lima Airport Partners, which operates the airport.

Lima Airport Partners had previously said that all passengers were unharmed.

Images published on Twitter by local radio station RPP Notícias showed a LATAM Airlines plane partially on fire on the runway.

Fire department official Mario Casaretto told RPP Notícias that the plane reported problems with the landing gear. Flight LA2213, involved in the accident, was on a domestic Lima-Juliaca route, Latam Airlines said.

“At this time, we inform you that there were no fatalities among the people on board the aircraft and we are focused on supporting passengers and their families. In addition, work is being carried out in coordination with the competent authorities to support the investigation of the incident as soon as possible,” said Latam.
