Latin America dominates ranking of most turbulent flights in the world in 2024

Countries of Latin America dominated the ranking that defined the most turbulent flight routes of 2024 according to the specialized website Turbli. With six of the 10 sections belonging to Chile and Argentina, the trip between Mendoza (MDZ) and Santiago (SCL) took first place on the list.

THE Turbli study used turbulence forecast data from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the UK Met Office weather service to put together the list. With this, they analyzed around 10 thousand routes, between the 550 largest airports in the world, during one year.

In 2023, Chile also topped the ranking of the most turbulent routes in the world with the stretch between Santiago (SCL) and Santa Cruz (VVI), in Bolivia — the only one in Latin America that appeared in the survey at the time. In 2024, the opposite route, between Santa Cruz (VVI) and Santiago (SCL), appeared in seventh place.

In addition to stretches close to the Andes Mountains, Nepal, Bhutan and China shared the other positions in the 2024 ranking, appearing in fifth, sixth, ninth and tenth place.

Survey-specific rankings

The study also covered other categories, such as the most turbulent routes by continent, distance and region.

In the category that covered North America, the research considered the stretch between Albuquerque (ABQ) and Denver (DEN), in the United States, as the most turbulent. In South America, the route between Mendoza (MDZ) and Santiago (SCL) took first place.

In Europe, the route between Nice (NCE) and Geneva (GVA) was at the top of the ranking. In Asia, first place went to Kathmandu (KTM) and Lhasa (LXA). In Africa, Durban (DUR) and Johannesburg (JNB); and in Oceania, Christchurch (CHC) and Wellington (WLG).

No Brazilian city appeared in the 2024 ranking . In 2023, Brazil dominated the South American ranking, with stretches of São Paulo (GRU), Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and Florianópolis (FLN) occupying six positions on the list.

In addition to these, in 2023, the route between Cape Town (CPT) and São Paulo (GRU) was considered the sixth most turbulent in the long-distance category. In the medium distance category, the trip between Florianópolis (FLN) and Santiago (SCL) was the ninth most turbulent. All were left out of the current ranking.
