Latin America must react in case of attempted coup in Brazil, says Boric

the president of Chile , Gabriel Boric said that all of Latin America must react together if the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) does not accept the result of the presidential elections in October.

The statement was given by the Chilean leader in an interview with the edition of “Time” magazine published this Wednesday (31).

When asked what he would do to support Brazilian democracy if Bolsonaro does not accept the result of this year’s election, Boric said he was “very hopeful” when he saw the “Letter to Brazilians and Brazilians in Defense of the Democratic Rule of Law”, prepared by the Law School of the University of São Paulo (USP), reach one million signatures.

“Well, it was very hopeful to see the letter from São Paulo, which has one million signatures in favor of democracy, with the transversality of the signatories of [vários setores da sociedade e da política]. It was a powerful signal from Brazilian civil society”, declared the Chilean president.

He then compared the Brazilian scenario with the situation in Bolivia in 2020, when the then victory of Evo Morales , re-elected in the first round, was questioned. Amid social turmoil, Morales resigned from his post, which was assumed on an interim basis by the second vice president of the Senate, Jeanine Áñez.

“If there is an attempt like what happened, for example, with Bolivia [em 2020]where something that was not fraud was accused of fraud, and a coup d’état was validated, Latin America will have to react together to prevent it”.

Tension between Boric and Bolsonaro

The Brazilian president quoted Boric during the presidential debate organized by TV Bandeirantes in partnership with UOL, Folha de S.Paulo and TV Cultura last Sunday (28).

At the end of the meeting, Bolsonaro tried to associate the image of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), his main opponent to the Planalto Palace, with other left-wing South American leaders. “Lula supported the president of Chile too, the same one who practiced acts of setting fire to subways there in Chile,” he declared.

The following day, Antonia Urrejola, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, announced that the Chilean government had summoned the Brazilian ambassador to Santiago to explain the statement made by the Chief Executive. “The statements are very serious. Obviously, they are absolutely false and we regret that, in an electoral context, they take advantage of the bilateral and polarized relationship through disinformation and fake news”, said Antonia.

On Tuesday (30), Bolsonaro spoke about tensions with the neighboring country and took the opportunity to criticize the project for a new Chilean Constituent, which will be voted on next Sunday, September 4.

“The president of Chile has now just called his ambassador, a way he has of showing dissatisfaction with me. Whether I exaggerated or not, I did not fail to speak the truth. The Constituent Assembly of Chile goes against what any democratic country wants. Is that their problem? It’s their problem, but the citizen there had the support of a guy here in Brazil”, said the head of the Brazilian Executive during an event held by the National Union of Entities of Commerce and Services (Unecs).

THE CNN contacted the Itamaraty to comment on Boric’s statement and on the Brazilian ambassador to Chile’s request for an explanation, but has not yet received a response.
